As a family of four in a small home with one bathroom, we are used to sharing and using space as wisely as possible. But adding in guests, holidays, and potty training kiddos to the mix? Whoa. We love to host parties and family, especially over the holidays, so getting our bathroom into tip-top shape to be kiddo friendly and still beautiful, is high on my priority list. When I think of hosting a crowd my mind goes two places: lots of food and lots of toilet paper (OMG kids and their toilet paper use… what?)!

Micro Makeover, Making your bathroom guest friendly for the holidays!Quilted Northern Ultra Soft & Strong® Mega Rolls are huge, (four regular rolls in one!) they last and last. This is a big boon when having crowds of little ones using your restroom, because it means we don’t have to change out the roll as quickly (we often go through two a week when we have lots of playdates!).

This year is the first time we will have over night house-guests in our home (I am SO excited!), and I want to share a quick tutorial on how to do a micro-makeover to your bathroom to make it more guest friendly for the holidays!

We did a little bit of renovation, here is our bathroom about six months ago.

And today:

Micro Makeover, Making your bathroom guest friendly for the holidays!

I will admit to not loving our bathroom, it’s very small and all of the updates are done by us, so I can see every flaw and failure in our work (first time tiling – not our best, who would have guessed?). But spending some time shopping for a few little fun pieces and then dedicating an hour to freshening up with space for guests has made me love it far more. I feel the same calm I do when I look in on a stocked fridge when I see rolls of toilet paper, freshly washed towels, and all the supplies for clean kiddos easy to snag. Doing this little make-over inspired me to brainstorm and spend a little time minimizing, and giving some winter love to the living room as well. It’s amazing what a little organizing and pine cuttings can do for a space.

Micro Makeover, Making your bathroom guest friendly for the holidays!

Step One: Minimize. The first step in any great room make-over is to minimize. Take out what you don’t need, be ruthless, and move forward. For example, we had SO many hand-towels, far more than needed. I cut out about half of them and popped them into storage. If we don’t use them at all in the next six months, I’ll donate them. I also moved everything possible off the vanity that wasn’t visually appealing or kid friendly. I found a new space for our tooth brushes (kinda gross to have them out with company!) and readied all the spaces for some little wintery touches.

Step Two:  Think about what kids will need in your bathroom, and what will make that an easier visit for parents. For us that meant lots of toilet paper (super easy to find at Target!). Flossers for kiddos (have you ever used these? They make life a bazillion times easier, and work so well!), easy access soap that doesn’t distribute too much, and a full thing of bubble bath. I made sure to stock up on all of this and then added in a little step stool by the toilet and a taller one for the sink. If the smaller ones can be bathroom independent, it’s far easier on parents and it also means it’s FAR less messy.

Step Three: Details. This means things that smell great, little details that show you are thinking of your guests (easily accessable
cotton balls, q-tips, replacement toilet paper rolls, and soaps), and make it easier for them to use your space without having to ask you for endless refills. Thankfully these Quilted Northern Mega Rolls are huge and look fuller on the roll and need far less frequent replacing. One of my favorite ways to update a bathroom for winter is to add a sprig of great smelling greenery. I love using Juniper, Eucalyptus (especially during cold season!), Pine, or Spruce. Adding that to your shower or door is gorgeous, but also makes your space feel fresh without a bunch of artificial scents.

Step Four: Enough, but not too much. Now that you’ve minimized you can take stock of what is in your cleaned out space and see what would make it function better. Too many towels? Cluttered? Take out all but just the right amount, and make them accessible to your guests. I like to keep things that can be washed, replaced, or are inexpensive and not messy down low. But stuff that can become a messy toy (toilet paper, and candles) up higher. Same mentality goes with decoration. I love to add a wintery/holiday look because it lasts long before/after Christmas. This is a beautiful New-Year’s look and carries into even February beautifully.

Finding all of these little decorations was easy at Target, I headed straight to the dollar bins to stock up on some cute little pieces, great smelling and beautiful candles (my love language), and those little twinkle lights. Then we headed to the bathroom tissue aisle. The Quilted Northern® Mega Rolls are a new product, but were super easy to find. We snagged a pack and then made our way through all the Christmas decorations and I nearly bought a giant fake tree (what?! Who am I?!)
